Sunscreens That Falsely Claim To Be Reef-Safe
If there’s one thing we’ve learned on our quest for our favorite reef-safe sunscreens, it’s that there are a lot of brands falsely advertising as reef-safe while still containing ingredients known to be dangerous to coral reefs. While some states have banned sunscreen containing Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, there are actually eight sunscreen ingredients that pose a threat. The other six are Octisalate, Homosalate, Avobenzone, Octocrylene, PABA (Aminobenzoic Acid), and Enzacamene.
Below you’ll find an ongoing list of brands who are labeling their NOT reef-safe products as reef-safe or reef-friendly. Some do carry truly reef-safe options, but still continue to falsely label their other products. We urge you to contact these companies and urge them to remove claims of “reef-safe” and “reef-friendly” from their packaging and marketing or make the switch to a truly reef-safe formula.

Don’t get discouraged! There are still a lot of great brands out there who are truly reef-safe! We recommend the following, but you’re not limited to these options. Simply check the label for any of the eight harmful ingredients mentioned above and stick to non-nano zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide!
